Transportation Ministry tightens safety measures for pleasure boats in St. Petersburg

Russia’s Ministry of Transport has ordered transport authorities in St. Petersburg to ensure safety of the navigation in 2012. Now, all passengers on board recreational boats of R 0.6 class (according to the Russian River Register shipping classification) will have to wear life jackets. Such vessels shall be prohibited access to the Neva River at the "deteriorating weather conditions forecast and during heavy traffic" on the river.

In addition, the Russian River Register was instructed to hold before the 2013 navigation season re-certification of these ships to Class L, so the crafts will not be allowed to sail in the Neva River basin.

Overall, 30 regional companies operate in St. Petersburg 187 of such class boats (R 0.6 Fontanka class), the North West GosMorRechnadz told PortNews.
