Neva-Metal throughput rises 1.5 times in Q1, to 700,000 tons

Cargo handling at CJSC Neva-Metal terminal in January-March 2012 was over 700,000 tons, a 1.5 times growth from Q1, 2011, the Severstal stevedore company said.

According to Severstal Group, the three-month volume of general cargoes (breakbulk) handled by Neva-Metal totaled 90,000 tons.

Containerized cargo rose by 12% to 22,000 tons, or about 32,000 TEUs, representing 24% of the total number of transshipped cargo.

"We’ve seen the general cargo shipments since Q4, 2011. Besides, we started handling steel, salt, and sulfur. As a result, in January-March, the volume of general cargo made up about 12% of the total throughput of the company. This is a 10-percent gain compared to last year," said General Director of Neva-Metal Mikhail Panov.

Shipments of ferrous metals of Severstal’s Cherepovets MP accounted for more than 60% of the three-month traffic – 480,000 tons.
Export of grab and suction bulk cargo totaled about 20,000 tons (about 3% of the first-quarter traffic). Container volume was about 11,000 TEUs (7,300 pieces).

CJSC Neva-Metal is a division of Cherepovetsk Severstal. Neva-Metal specializes in handling ferrous metals exported by Cherepovetsk Severstal, secondary metals from Severstal-Vtormet and containerized cargo at the berths located in the 3rd Cargo Area at Big Port St. Petersburg. Throughput of the stevedoring company in 2010 amounted to 2.374 million tons
