Inland shipping in Brabant grows 11 percent

Transport on the canals in Brabant in 2011 grew by 11% to 7.2 million tonnes, according to the Directorate-General for Public Works and Water Management, Port of Rotterdam Authority reports.

Container transport had a particularly good result: +30%. Inland shipping in Brabant will receive extra stimulus from the widening and deepening of the Zuid-Willemsvaart and the Wilhelmina Canal. (Verwijs naar het bericht op de site over het Wilhelminakanaal) There are terminals in Den Bosch, Eindhoven, Waalwijk, Bergen op Zoom, Tilburg, Oosterhout, Moerdijk and Veghel. The last terminal expects growth this year in container transport on the canals of Brabant to continue by 30%.

That is a good reason for the Veghel terminal to expand by 1.4 hectares in a few weeks, and expand another two hectares in two years’ time. Dairy producer Friesland Campina recently became a customer of the terminal. Friesland Campina will transport all its export via Veghel in containers by water to Rotterdam. More long-standing customers include wholesaler Sligro and confectionary manufacturer Mars. Sligro ships 3000 containers per year, one third of which bring wine from countries like Chile and New Zealand. Mars uses the terminal to supply Germany, France and Switzerland.
