Amur Shipyard lays corvette Gromky for Russian Pacific Fleet

Amur Shipyard held an official keel-laying ceremony for the corvette Gromky ordered for the Pacific Fleet (PF), Rusnavy reports. The ceremony took place at the ship's first section welded in mid-Feb and was attended by PF Acting Commander RADM Sergei Avakiants, Governor of Khabarovsk Krai Vyacheslav Shport, representatives of shipbuilding industry and community of Komsomolsk-on-Amur.

When the meeting was over, a team of arc welders headed by Eduard Bytov attached the ship's keel-laying plaque to the first section.

According to the shipyard's deputy general director Viktor Myshkin, that is the second corvette in the series laid down at JSC Amur Shipyard.

"We plan to deliver the corvette in 2015. Her elder sister – corvette Sovershenny – will be completed and join Pacific Fleet in 2013", Myshkin said.

Project 20380 corvettes are designed for littoral sea warfare, e.g. countering enemy surface ships, providing gunfire support to landing operations, etc. Constructively, their hulls are built under advanced technology. For the first time in Russian Navy, ships of such size will have stern hangar with heliport. Basic weapon is Uragan antiship missile system.

Ships of this kind will strengthen Pacific Fleet at Primorsky Krai and Kamchatka, said RADM Sergei Avakiants at the keel-laying ceremony.

"We also expect new-generation seagoing ships capable to be deployed worldwide", emphasized Avakiants.
