Hong Kong box traffic up 0.7 percent to 7.72 million TEUs in Jan-Apr, 2012
Container throughput at the Port of Hong Kong (China) in January-April 2012 totaled 7.72 million TEUs, or a 0.7-percent gain compared with the same period last year, the Port Authority statistics said.
Shipments of containers through Kwai Tsing, the port's largest container terminal rose 3.6% to 5.77 million TEUs, container traffic at other terminals fell by 7.1% to 1.95 million TEUs.
In April, handling of containerized imports / exports declined by 4.2% to 2.11 million TEUs. Monthly volume of containers at Kwai Tsing grew 0.7% to 1.49 million TEUs, while other terminals reported a 14.2-percent drop to 620,000 TEUs.
Port of Hong Kong is one of the busiest container ports in the world. In 2011, overall container throughput at the Port of Hong Kong totaled 24.4 million TEUs. The port is able to handle 456,000 ships a year.
