Piraeus Port posts 9M loss of 0.6 mln euros

The port of Piraeus (OLP), the largest in Greece, posted a nine-month loss of 0.6 million euros ($776,300) on Friday, blaming a continuing industrial dispute.
OLP , which made a net profit of about 20 million euros in the same period last year, said full-year results would be in the red if strikes continued over a deal for China's Cosco Pacific  to run its container business.
"The dockers' refusal to work overtime and weekends for the third consecutive quarter has led to reduced cargo business and income at very low levels," the company said in a bourse filing.
Sales for the third quarter dropped 37 percent, while business at the port's container terminal fell nearly 60 percent, the company said.
OLP has seen containers pile up as dockers have refused to work overtime since January in protest at the government's move to privatise the port's container business.
China's Cosco Pacific, the world's fifth-largest port operator, signed a deal this week to update and run OLP's port facilities for up to 35 years. Cosco is expected to take over management of the container operations in 2009.
OLP's share price has lost about 62 percent since the start of the year, while the Athens stock market general index is down about 64 percent.
