Ukrainian ports are overloaded with containers due to consignees’ mass rejection of cargo. If it continues the ports may suspend cargo transshipment, Korrespondent.net reports.
The largest Ukrainian ports – Iljichevsk and Odessa – announced that their container terminals are congested with unclaimed freight. According to Nikolai Pavlyuk, Head of Odessa port, "the number of containers at the grounds nears maximum and if it continues we will be not able to accept containers in 10-15 days". "On Wednesday we addressed the Cabinet of Ministers with a request to speed up customs clearance. It will probably revive the turnover", he added.
The ports attribute the situation mainly to financial crisis as the companies are unable to pay for goods ordered several months ago.
