Islamic Development Bank to spend $2b on Indonesian port

The Islamic Development Bank (IDB) has stated it is interested in spending US$2.04 billion on the construction of the Gabion Container Terminal (TPK), Belawan port, North Sumatra, Bisnis Indonesia reported.
The project will make Belawan an international-scale hub port.
One of the driving factors behind the decision is the port's proximity to the Malacca Straits shipping route, which is traversed by international trade ships carrying a total of 40 million TEUs per year.
The expansion of the Gabion container terminal has already been approved by the National Development Planning Agency and the Department of Transportation.
This is a long-term project, expected to take over 10 years to realise. The first phase will cover the construction of a 700-metre long pier, line dredging, and procurement of loading-unloading machineries.
This phase would also involve the development of a pier complete with four units of post-panamax gantry cranes, in order to accommodate fifth-generation container ship with a carrying capacity of 5,000 TEUs.
