"Although we cannot predict the impact of the new terminal, it should definitely bring more vessels to the port and should create more bunker opportunities," a local bunker supplier told Bunkerworld.
The 158-acre Jacksonville Port Authority (JAXPORT) terminal is scheduled to open on January 12 and is said to offer the most efficient shipping and intermodal combinations in the South Atlantic, a port report said.
"How much bunker business the new terminal generates will as always be dependent on the markets in the other ports where the container vessels will also call," the supplier added.
Due to its location, the terminal will allow shippers to reach more than 60% of the US population within 24 hours, according to the port report.
Port representatives expect that the new terminal could double Jacksonville's container business over the next four to five years.
The terminal's post-Panamax container handling systems also has an annual capacity of 800,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs).
Mitsui O.S.K. Lines has already begun some services to JAXPORT and expects their container volume to build over the next few years once their terminal opens in January, Bunkerworld has learned.
