Overall east-west container shipping capacity drops 6.7%

Container shipping capacity on the three main east to west trade routes has declined by 6.7 per cent in the four month period from August 1-December 1, reports AXS-Alphaliner News.
During this period, the total weekly capacity on offer has decreased to 855,000 TEU down from 916,000 TEU. According to AXS-Alphaliner News records, a breakdown of the three trades show that in the four months to December 1, weekly capacity on the Far East to Europe/Mediterranean trade has fallen by 9 per cent from 418,000 TEU to 380,000 TEU.
The Far East to North America trade has shrunk by 5.5 per cent to 357,000 TEU, down from an earlier 376,000 TEU, while the Europe to Mediterranean to North America route has suffered a capacity decline of 2.5 per cent to 118,000 TEU, down from 121,500 TEU.
