Canadian Port of Hamilton launches short-sea service

The Canadian Port of Hamilton, Ont., will launch a short sea shipping initiative with a dedicated container feeder vessel connecting India and Pakistan via the Montreal Gateway Terminal.
The Hamilton Port Authority said the shipment of mostly recycled metals for Sunrise Metals consists of 68 containers which will be barged to Montreal by Hamilton-based McKeil Marine and then routed overseas by Maersk Line and CMA CGM.
It is the first shipment of its kind for the Lake Ontario port, which is seeking to develop viable container feeder services with Halifax and Montreal.
"We've invested a significant amount of time with a number of port partners over the past two months making this long-discussed concept a reality with this trial shipment," said HPA President and CEO Bruce Wood. "Making this specialized type of service an important piece of the port's traffic connecting to Canada's East Coast ports is a central part of our overall strategy."
The authority is hoping that a successful test will attract other shippers to move products via waterways.
