New jetty of the Maasvlakte Oil Terminal starts on December 9

Tuesday 9 December saw the first ship moor officially at the new jetty of the Maasvlakte Oil Terminal (MOT). It can accommodate vessels with a dwt of up to 400,000 tonnes and a draught in excess of 22 metres. The old jetty (jetty 2) was severely damaged during a fierce storm on 18 January 2007, when it was hit by a container ship that had broken adrift.
Considering the time and money that would have been involved in repairing the jetty, the decision was made to build a completely new one. The location of the jetty would have had to be changed sometime in the future anyway, in connection with access to Maasvlakte 2, and this was taken into account with the new structure.
Maasvlakte Oil Terminal is a joint venture of BP, ExxonMobil, Kuwait Petroleum, Shell, Total and Vopak. For more than 35 years now, MOT has been playing an important role in the supply chain between oil producers and the five Dutch refineries. It is one of the largest oil terminals in the world. The 36 tanks have a capacity of around 4 million tonnes of crude oil.
