Brazil's private ports law next year

As of January 2009, Brazil's government will start launching tenders for the construction and administration of new ports and terminals by the private sector, Business News Americas reported. The announcement follows a decree signed by President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva in October, which dictates new policies for the concession, rental and installation of port terminals. Under the new law, port authorities will no longer be able to grant companies their own container terminals, as all new port projects will have to be awarded through a public bidding process.
The 124 private terminals that currently exist throughout the country will continue to function through port authority authorization.
The new law was designed to alleviate bottlenecks in the country's container terminals and facilitate private investment in port construction and administration.
