Throughput of Riga port up 14% to 26.88 mln t in Jan-Nov 08

In January-November 2008, Freeport of Riga (Latvia) handled 26.886.20 million tonnes of cargo (+13.9%, year-on-year), the port informs.

In the reported period, transshipment of general cargo fell by 13.8%, to 4.497.6 million tonnes including 1.934.9 million tonnes of timber (-29.9%, year-on-year), 1.762.9 million tonnes of containerized cargo (+1.9%). Transshipment of ro-ro cargo grew by 31.4%, year-on-year, to 607,500 tonnes.

The port’s container throughput fell by 2.1%, year-on-year, to 191,293 TEU.

Transshipment of loose dry cargo amounted to 17.543.4 million tonnes (+26.6%), including 338,300 tonnes of grain (up 2.2 times, year-on-year), 175,500 tonnes of sugar (up 1.8 times) and 12.407.9 million tonnes of coal (+33.1%).

In the reported period, transshipment of liquid bulk cargo totaled 4.845.2 million tonnes (+6.8%, year-on-year) including 4.784.5 million tonnes of oil products (+6.3%).

Freeport of Riga lies on both banks of the River Daugava covering 15 kilometres in length. Loading capacity (assessed) at the terminals of the Freeport of Riga accounts for 45 million tons per annum.

In 2007 the volume of the transshipped cargoes has reached 25,9 million tons – it is the highest index during all the 805 years of Riga port activities.

Up to 80% of the Freeport of Riga cargo turnover is made up of transit cargoes forwarded to or received from the CIS. 31 stevedore companies and 40 shipping agents successfully operate at the Freeport of Riga. Main types of cargo handled at the Freeport of Riga are containers, various metals, timber, coal, mineral fertilizers, chemical cargoes, oil and food products.
