In January-November 2008, the port of St. Petersburg handled 56.146.9 million tonnes of cargo (+3%, year-on-year), Administration of Big Port of St. Petersburg states. In the reported period, transshipment of bulk cargo amounted to 9.104.2 million tonnes (+2%) including 945,700 tonnes of ore (+35%), 2.028.4 million tonnes of coal and coke (-3%), 6.006.4 million tonnes of mineral fertilizers (-0.3%). Transshipment of loose dry cargo fell by 31% to 399,000 tonnes including 383,800 tonnes of grain (-34%), 9,500 tonnes of sugar and 5,700 tonnes of other loose cargo. In the 11-month period, the port handled 1.073.9 million tonnes of timber (-52%) and 13.659.8 million tonnes of general cargo (-0.03%) including 3.785.4 million tonnes of ferrous metal (-4%), 1.324.9 million tonnes of non-ferrous metal (-2%), 1.696.9 million tonnes of scrap metal (-26%). Transshipment of packaged goods totaled 865,600 tonnes (+46%, year-on-year).
In the reporte period, transshipment of refrigerated cargo amounted to 3.487.9 million tonnes (+0.3%), other general cargo – 2.499.2 million tonnes (+26%). The port’s container throughput totaled 1,842,499 TEUS (+13%). Transshipment of oil cargo grew by 3% to 14.157.9 million tonnes. In January-November the port’s turnover of vessels grew to 28,495 units.
Port of St. Petersburg is located on the islands in the mouth of the Neva-river, in the Neva Bay at the eastern side of the Gulf of Finland (Baltic Sea). The Big Port of St. Petersburg includes the mouth of the Neva-river, the Neva Bay, Kronshtadt and the complex of structures protecting St. Petersburg from flood (the dam).
