Contargo plans to build a new hinterland terminal in Northern France

Inland shipping operator Contargo plans to build a new hinterland terminal in the Valenciennes. The terminal will cover an area of 3 ha., with a gantry crane and two railway tracks stretching 350 metres. The trains will be handled using reach stackers.
The terminal is needed because nearby Prouvy is reaching full capacity. In 2007, Prouvy handled 44,000 TEU (+10% in comparison with 2006). In the same region, Contargo also operates terminals in Dourges and Bethune. There are regular inland shipping services to Rotterdam and other North Sea ports.
Northern France (Lille region) is one of the four important areas for Rotterdam. The others are Alsace-Lorraine and the Rhone valley (Lyon region). The Île-de-France is becoming interesting, mainly for containerised consumer goods. In Valenciennes and the surrounding area, a lot of the container cargo is related to the car industry.
