GIANT container carrier MSC has taken delivery of the 13,800 TEU MSC Daniella from Samsung Heavy Industry Shipyard, South Korea this week. The newbuilding is built to Germanischer Lloyd rules and is the largest GL containership.
The MSC Daniella incorporates many novel design features and a return tot he large scale use of high tensiel steel (HTS). GL says: “ To meet SOLAS requirements for bridge visibility on the large containership, the design includes the separation of deckhouse and engine room.” The bridge and accommodation black sits on top of the bunker tanks which comply with IMO regulations on the protection of fuel tanks are being fulfilled, since they are located in the protected area below the deckhouse.
GL says: “Also, reduced bending as well as increased stiffness of the hull had been realised in the design. The HTS was a prerequisite for building the 'megaboxer'. Due to HT steel the plate thickness had been reduced to allow lightweight and strong ship construction. This was necessary to keep the plate and stiffener dimensions at an acceptable level.”
