Phase 3 consists of seven berths of 70,000 to 100,000 tonnes, which can handle five million TEU a year and covers a quay length of 2,600 metres and a back up area of 5.9 square kilometres.
Construction was carried out in three stages. Stage 1 was finished a year ago. Stage 2 just started operation in December. Completion of the last stage has raised the total of berths in north Yangshan to 16 with quay length to 5.6 kilometres with aggregate capacity rising to 9.3 million TEU a year.
The report said Yangshan will shift its focus to the west port area in the future now that the north area has been finished. But the berths in the west area tend to have a lower capacity than northern ones because of less favourable natural conditions such as adverse water currents.
According to the development plan, the west Yangshan port area will have 10 to 12 berths of from 50,000 to 100,000 tonnes with a quay length of over four kilometres. Construction of these berths will be completed by 2013.
