THE NEW Mangalore Port has handled a record 21,859 TEU so far in the current fiscal year, an increase of 48 per cent compared to the same period a year ago.
The increase in container traffic at the south Indian port has been attributed to the commissioning of two reach stackers, an increase in stacking yard capacity and more reefer plug points, upgrades to the road network leading to the port, greater efficiency in container handling by port workers and better planning by the port's management, according to comments made by New Mangalore Port Trust chairman P Tamilvanan in an online report by DHNS.
Mr Tamilvanan also noted that trade volumes at the port have risen owing to a higher number of vessels arriving from east and west African nations laden with containers of raw cashew nuts, which previously were mainly transhipped via Colombo.
The chairman is optimistic of handling 30,000 TEU by the end of the current financial year, the report said.
Mangalore Port reintroduced container handling services in March 2000 and since then the port has been handling increasing volumes of coffee, reefer cargo, project cargo and logs among other commodities, the report added.
