Klaipeda port finalizes first phase of berths renovation
The first phase of modernization of berthing facilities in the port of Klaipeda has been completed, the Klaipeda Port Authority reported.
On October 8, 2012 the renovated Berth # 67A, operated by stevedoring company Bega, handled the first vessel Tanais Leader.
The state port’s stevedore and Josef Mobius Bau-Aktiengesellschalf (currently Josef Möbius Bau-GmbH) on September 2, 2010 signed an agreement on the reconstruction of Berths Number 66-67, with extension of Berths No 66a and 67a.
The second phase includes works on Berths No 66a - 67a with engineering services. The overall cost of the facilities construction is 52 million litas.
The berths have formed a pier for stevedoring operations. The length of the already constructed pier (by the order of the Port Authority) is 236.8 m, width - 30 m, depth - 13 m (to be deepened up to 14.5 m). The pier will enable Bega for handling bulk, general cargoes and liquid bulk.
The port plans to complete soon the construction of Berths No 143A, worth 16.3 million litas, and to overhaul Berths No 8-9 worth 24 million litas.
State-run Port of Klaipeda, the northernmost ice-free port on the East coast of the Baltic Sea, is the largest Lithuanian transport hub, connecting sea and inland traffic lanes. There are 17 stevedore companies, shipyards and other operators at the port, providing a broad range of services. In 2011, Port of Klaipeda cargo throughput rose 36 million tons from 31.27m tons a year before.
