The U.S. Coast Guard has confirmed there was a fuel oil spill in Port Angeles, Washington, at the Tesoro Port Angeles terminal at 3:20 a.m. on Wednesday, Ship & Bunker reports.
Coast Guard said it received a report of the incident saying the spill occurred after a fuel drum was overfilled during fueling operations aboard a barge at the dock, with local report saying later is was a Harley Marine Services barge that was overfilled.
Early reports by local media quoted the state's Ecology Department saying 840 gallons of heavy fuel had been spilled, but this was later revised down to "about 50 to 100 gallons" spilled into the water as most of the fuel had stayed on the barge deck.
The area was pre-boomed and the fuel oil was reported to be contained within the boom.
Washington Department of Ecology, Marine Spill Response Corp. and Global Diving & Salvage responded to the incident along with the Coast Guard.
Ecology spokesman Curt Hart said Harley Marine is paying for oil recovery efforts.
