GAC to open Thai DC in mid-2007 for 3PL business

Shipping and logistics company GAC Group plans to invest US$6 million in building a modern multi-user warehouse and distribution centre in Thailand as part of its efforts to expand its global third-party logistics (3PL) business.Located in the Amata Nakorn Industrial Estate, the logistics facility will offer more than 14,000 racking positions and be equipped with the latest material handling and transport equipment, warehousing and inventory tracking IT systems, as well as special storage facilities for climate controlled products when it is completed by mid-2007.
The centre will occupy a site measuring 10,000 square metres. Johan Vermeiren, general manager for GAC Thailand, said: "Our penetration into the growing warehousing and distribution business will bolster GAC's 14-year presence in the country and complement our current portfolio in ship agency and freight forwarding services." The distribution centre is intended to provide end-to-end supply chain management solutions including inbound logistics, warehousing, retail distribution and value added services such as packing, kitting, labelling and quality sampling/testing, a company statement said. The decision to invest in this facility follows GAC's appointment as Mead Johnson's third party logistics provider in Thailand. Under the agreement, GAC's will provide the global nutritional brand with warehousing and transportation services for its raw and packing materials as well as finished goods for export to Asian destinations.
