STX Shipbuilding wins 750 bil. won orders for 13 tankers
STX Offshore & Shipbuilding said on December 23 that it has won 75-billion-won orders for 13 vessels including three 160,000-DWT and ten 110,000-DWT tankers from BP Shipping, a British shipping company. All the ships will be built in the company's Jinhae Dockyard and delivered by the end of 2015, Korea it Times reports.
As the latest contract includes an option to build eight additional ships, the total order amount will be 1.2 trillion won for 21 ships.
The commissioning entity BP Shipping is a subsidiary of BP, one of the world's largest oil companies, focusing mainly on the shipping of crude oil and natural gas.
BP Shipping has thus far relied on Korean and Japanese shipbuilders for its vessel needs. An STX official said that it succeeded in winning the ship orders from BP Shipping as it passed the company's strict standards related to health, safety, and environment as well as technical specifications.
