Tank container for transportation of liquefied helium produced in Russia

A tank container for transportation of liquefied helium has been designed and tested in Russia, PortNews IAA reporter refers to Oleg Popov, First  Deputy Director General in charge of scientific and design work of NPO Geliymash, as saying at the Conference “Containers and container transportation - up-to-date solution for cargo delivery” organized in St. Petersburg by the Russian Maritime Register of Shipping.

He noted that such container have been so far produced only in the USA. The container was developed to the order of Gazprom OJSC. 

It is a 40-ft container capable of keeping 4.5 tons of liquefied helium at 269 Celsius degrees for 30 days. Nitrogen is used for cooling.

The tank container has passed the test with helium transportation.

In Russia helium is produced near Orenburg. Russia is the first in the world in terms of helium reserves, concentrating primarily in Eastern Siberia.

Russia is expected to require maximum 1,035 specialized tank containers by 2020. Helium is supposed to be purchased in Russia particularly by the USA which is the world’s first consumer of helium. It is followed by Europe and the Middle East.

Helium is used primarily by hi-tech productions.
