The Chinese Port of Zhangjiagang in Jiangsu province has experienced a 23.2 per cent surge in cargo volumes during the first 10 months of the year, to handle a total of 84.98 million tons of cargo, compared to the same period a year ago.Consequently, mainland authorities are predicting that the port's total cargo throughput will surpass the 100-million-ton mark by the end of this year, Xinhua News Agency reports. From January to October 2006, the port's box volume grew by 22.1 per cent year on year, while foreign trade cargo volume was said to have increased by 25.2 per cent to 25.06 million tons, which already tops the total volume of foreign trade handled in 2005.
