Russia increased its harvest of fish and other seafood products 1.1% year-on-year in January-November 2006, the federal fisheries agency Rosrybolovstvo told Interfax.
Russian fishing organizations caught 3.007 million tonnes of fish and other seafood products in January-November 2006, which is 32,500 tonnes more, or 1.1%, than in the first eleven months of 2005 when 2.975 million tonnes of fish were harvested.
In Russia's domestic waters, territorial seas, exclusive economic zone and continental shelf as well as the Azov, Black and Caspian seas, 2.236 million tonnes of fish were harvested in January-November 2006, which is 25,800 tonnes more, or 1.2%, than in the same period of 2005 when 2.211 million tonnes of fish were harvested.
Rosrybolovstvo said Russian fishermen caught 770,900 tonnes of fish in other countries' zones, in regions governed by convention and on the high open seas in the first eleven months of 2006, up 0.9%, or by 6,600 tonnes, from January-November 2005 when 764,300 tonnes were caught. The increase was the result of a rise in the catch of sardinella by 5,900 tonnes and mackerel by 17,500 tonnes in Morocco's fishing zone as well as a 18,900-tonne increase in the catch of herring in Norway's zone, a 25,500-tonne increase in the catch of blue whiting and a 14.5% increase in the catch of perch in the zone of the North East Atlantic Fisheries Commission.
