IMO Secretary-General Koji Sekimizu has completed his several–day voyage along the Northern Sea Route from Dikson to Pevek aboard the nuclear-powered icebreaker 50 Let Pobedy, says press center of RF Transport Ministry.
In the course of the voyage, IMO Secretary-General Koji Sekimizu Deputy Minister of Transport of the Russian Federation Victor Olersky participated in icebreaking escorting of vessels on NSR, held meetings with the icebreaker crew members and a number of consulting meetings dedicated to IMO activities, in particular, to the Polar Code being elaborated by IMO.
Upon arrival in the route’s end point - port Pevek - Koji Sekimizu and Victor Olersky held a meeting with the crew, cadets, students and researches of the practical training vessel Professor Khlyustin.
The training and research Arctic voyage of the Professor Khlyustin was arranged by the Maritime State University named after Nevelsky under the auspices of the Russian Geographical Society. The voyage was dedicated to the environmental study and the research of climate changes in the Arctic region. IMO Secretary-General told the cadets and students about the role of IMO in regulation of navigation issues in the world and answered their numerous questions.
In Pevek, IMO Secretary-General and Deputy Minister of Transport looked deeper into the search and rescue aid system of Russia’s Arctic seas and visited the Maritime Rescue Sub Center Pevek where Koji Sekimizu was introduced to the limits of the search and rescue district of Pevek Sub Center and specific features of its operation.
The personnel of Pevek Sub Center demonstrated implementation of RF obligations complying with the requirements of the international convention on maritime search and rescue (1979) in the part of organization and coordination of rescue operations on search and rescue of people in the Bering Strait, Chukotka and East Siberian Seas including the water area of NSR. Pevek Sub Center was set up in 2012 and is a part of FSI Gosmorspassluzhba (State Marine Rescue Service) subordinate to the Federal Marine and River Transport Agency.
On August 21, 2013, IMO Secretary-General Koji Sekimizu completed his official visit to Russia and left for London.
The next visit of IMO Secretary-General to Russia is scheduled for October 2013 on the occasion of 100-year anniversary of the Russian Maritime Register of Shipping.
