Port Ust-Luga (Leningrad region) has completed unloading of the first Sapsan train which arrived from Germany under the second order of Russian Railways for eight trains. Upon completion of precommissioning operations the train will be delivered to Metallostroi depot (Saint-Petersburg), Siemens LLC says.
By the end of December, one more train of the series will arrive at Russia. Iemens plans to complete delivery of high-speed trains by the middle of 2014.
Four single-voltage (EVS1) trains entered passenger service at the end of 2009 on the Moscow - St Petersburg route, with the dual-system trains (EVS2) entering service on the Nizhny Novgorod route on 30 July 2010. On December 19, 2011, a 600 million euro order for an additional 8 EVS2 sets was signed.
The Sapsan train is based on the Velaro platform, which is the most successful high-speed train in the world. The platform had been adapted to meet the requirements of Russian Railways. When developing Sapsan, Russian and German specialists obtained over 60 joint patents for technical solutions. The trains of the series can travel at a speed of up to 250 km/h. The Russian model of the Velaro train has been adapted to withstand the harsh winter temperatures in Russia (from -40 to +40 degrees Celsius).
The total length of each ten-car train is 250 m (820 ft), carrying up to 600 passengers. The trains’ bodies are widened by 330 mm (13 in) to 3,265 mm (10 ft 8.5 in) to suit Russia's wide loading gauge.
Siemens LLC is the head company of the regional cluster “Russia and Central Asia” comprising Russia, Balarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tadzhikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. Siemens in Russia and Central Asia numbers about 3,300 of personnel. The volume of orders in Russia, Belarus and Central Asia 2013 (as of September 30) was about EUR 2.4 bln, sales turnover exceeded EUR 2.4 bln.
