Murmansk Shipping Company expects 4-fold increase of NSR ice dues

Ice escort at the Northern Sea Route will actually cost 4 times more when recently elaborated Government Decree comes into effect. This was announced Vladimir Dmitrievsky, Director of Murmansk Shipping Company branch in Saint-Petersburg, at the III International Forum “Arctic: present and future”, IAA PortNews journalist reports.

According to Vladimir Dmitrievsky, the company’s expenses will grow as it will have to pay twice for ice escort: for passing NSR in both directions while at present it is paid only once per vessel.

Besides, the due will depend on vessel displacement, so larger vessels will pay more. Moreover, the period of mandatory ice escort will last from November 15 till late July when ice due should be paid regardless of the necessity to use an icebreaker.

Vladimir Dmitrievsky says the government should think about preservation of shipping companies’ expenses for ice escort at the present level at least, otherwise, this shipping will be not profitable amid the decreasing freight rates.
