Singapore urges distillate debate

The Singapore Shipping Association has called for a feasibility study on the implications of switching to distillate fuels. “We should not jump the gun,” SSA Council member, Patrick Phoon told reporters yesterday referring to Intertanko’s suggestion to make the switch from residual fuels in a bid to reduce sulphur emissions. Phoon is Deputy MD of Evergreen Shipping (S) Pte Ltd. SSA, which includes tanker owners as members, has, however, “applauded” Intertanko’s position agreeing that every effort should be made to protect the environment. Nevertheless SSA has stressed that much further detailed study is needed, expressing concern over what the association described as a “short” three-year time frame. Critical issues such as costs, yard space, supply and potential environment effects need to be examined in detail, Phoon said urging that oil majors should also be consulted. Calling for an open debate on the issue and a rational consideration of facts, SSA President Teo Siong Seng said in a statement: “It should not be a measure which is forced through without all voices being heard.”
