Vycon supplies crane technology to Long Beach

Vycon, a manufacturer of high cycling energy storage flywheel systems, has landed a contract to supply the Long Beach Container Terminal (LBCT) at the US west coast port with six Regen units for RTG cranes. The terminal operator is expected to take delivery of two units soon and an another four later next year.
The Regen System is an emissions reduction and fuel savings crane energy storage system that is currently being used at both the Port of Long Beach and the Port of Los Angeles, a company statement said. Vycon said discussions are also underway with several port operators in Asia and Europe, which have expressed an interest in the new environmentally friendly crane technology. "We pride ourselves on being the first to adopt new technologies for environmental improvements. We have tested several new options but have been most impressed with Vycon's Regen system," said Kevin Hayes, vice president of safety, security, maintenance and repair for Long Beach Container Terminal.
"We've had a chance to watch how the system works at the Evergreen and ITS terminals and that gave us the validation we needed to go forward with our purchase." Vycon hopes to eventually retrofit approximately 250 AC type RTG cranes that are currently in operation at southern California ports.
