Poland’s PGNiG to build EUR 350 million LNG terminal at Swinoujscie on the Baltic Sea coast

Poland's gas monopolist PGNiG Friday decided to locate its liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal at Swinoujscie on the Baltic Sea coast by the border with Germany, Interfax reports according to oilru.com. PGNiG is to form a consortium for implementation of a EUR 350 million project. The terminal will accept gas delivered mostly from the fields of the North Sea. Poland has set itself a task to diversify the sources of energy in order to decrease dependence on import of Russian gas.

The terminal’s first phase with the design capacity of 2-3 billion m3 is to be finished in 2011. The second phase will enable it to increase the capacity to 5 billion m3 first and to 7.5 billion m3 later. PGNiG has faced a problem related to the lack of free plots of land available for construction of the terminal in the district of Gdansk. It made the company change its initial plans.
