Deepwater port is necessary for both Kaliningrad region and Russia in general, RSPP President says

Aleksandr Shokhin, President of Russian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs (RSPP) thinks that the issue of possible redirection of resources intended for the construction of a deepwater port in the Kaliningrad Region should be discussed with the regional authorities, press center of the regional Government says.

“The port will open new opportunities for Russia in the competition for cargoes with the Baltic states, Lithuania and Poland. It will strengthen our positions in the competition with the North Sea ports,” RSPP President says.

The project on construction of a deepwater port in the Kaliningrad Region is included into the state programme on social and economic development of the Kaliningrad Region through 2020. Federal special-purpose programme “Development of Russia’s Transport System in 2010-2020” provides for allocation of about RUB 18 bln for this purpose. In early June, Arkady Dvorkovich,  Deputy PM of the Russian Federation, proposed RF Transport Minister to redirect part of those resources for the construction of transport facilities in other regions of Russia.
