The volume of cargoes transported by inland water ways of Russia during the initial period of navigation 2014 sees a 16-pct growth, year-on-year, IAA PortNews cites Vladimir Abornev, head of inland water transport department of Federal Marine and River Transport Agency as saying at the joint meeting of the Agency’s Board and the Public Council held on June 4, 2014.
According to him, cargo turnover of river terminals increased by 27%, year-on-year. In particular, transportation of construction materials climbed by 21%, ferrous metal – by 24%, timber – by 30%, while coal transportation decreased by 16%, oil – by 15%, chemical and mineral fertilizers – by 36%.
The number of vessels which passed the locks increased by 13%, year-on-year. The highest growth was registered at Moscow Canal (+22%) and at Volga-Don Ship Canal (+15%).
Meanwhile, the level of water storage basins was the lowest from 1922 which lead to draught restrictions at some sections.
At the same time, dozens of navigation signs were damaged by high water in the Ob Basin.
The official says special attention is paid today to dredging at Yakutia rivers in order to ensure supplies to the northern regions of Russia.
Besides, Vladimir Abornev noted the congestion of vessels at Tsymlyansk water storage basin and confirmed the necessity to build the second thread of Volga-Don Ship Canal.
