VSC LLC handles a cargo of enriched uranium for Asia Pacific nuclear power plants (photo release)

Vostochnaya Stevedoring Company LLC (VSC LLC, part of Global Ports) has successfully handled a shipment of enriched uranium product (EUP), the terminal operator said in a press release.

The cargo is intended for production of fuel for nuclear power plants and produced at Russian Rosatom State Corporation's enrichment plants for consumers in Asia-Pacific countries.

VSC is the only Russian Far East terminal licensed to handle loads of all existing hazard classes, including Class 7 Dangerous Goods (incl. EUP).

Six 20' Flat Rack containers (FRC) laden with packages containing uranium hexafluoride were delivered at VSC by rail and were transshipped onto a specialized vessel.

Transport and loading operations with FRC at the VSC yard were conducted in compliance with all necessary security measures for handling dangerous goods. Nuclear and radiation safety was ensured by JSC St. Petersburg Isotope, a subsidiary of Techsnabexport (JSC TENEX).

Checks were also carried out by Russian Federal Service for Ecological, Technical and Nuclear Supervision (RTN), Vostochny Port Authority and by customs and border protection officers. During the handling operation radiation level did not exceed the background radiation of 15 mR / hr.
This is the third shipment of EUP exported through the VSC terminal.
Previously, two cargoes of enriched uranium were handled at the facility in November and December, 2013. The cargo testing transshipment at the VSC berths was in October 2012.

Vostochnaya Stevedoring Company LLC is the largest container terminal in the Far East Region of the Russian Federation. It operates on the territory of Vostochny Port. VSC is a part of Global Ports group. The terminal’s total capacity is 550,000 TEUs.
