Siemens successfully installs fourth HVDC platform in the North Sea for TenneT

Siemens has received orders for five HVDC offshore grid connections in the German North Sea from the grid transmission operator TenneT. The converter platforms for the first four projects BorWin2, HelWin1, HelWin2 and SylWin1 have already been installed at sea, the Group said in a press release.

They are to begin commercial operation successively over the second half of 2014 and the first half of 2015. BorWin3, the fifth grid connection, which was contracted in spring 2014, is slated to go on-line in 2019. Nearly one million households will be supplied with electricity generated from wind power via this link alone. Thanks to the use of high-voltage direct-current transmission (HVDC) technology, the losses over those links are less than four percent.
