Tall ship Mir of Makarov University arrives in Saint-Petersburg (photo)
Educational tall ship Mir of Admiral Makarov State University of Maritime and Inland Shipping arrived in Saint-Petersburg on August 8, 2014, IAA PortNews journalist reports.
Mir has completed a spiritual patriotic voyage “Glory to Maritime fleet of Russia” included into the official state programme on celebration of the 300-year anniversary of Gangut Victory of the Russian fleet, the first victory of Russia’s regular fleet (July, 1714). The voyage started in April 2014 was supported by the Russian Orthodox Church.
An icon created for the icon stand of St. Panteleimon church built in Saint-Petersburg in commemoration of Gangut victory was delivered by the Mir to Athos (Greece) for consecration in the Cathedral of St. Panteleimon and then taken to the places of important marine victories of Russia like Sinop and others.
In Saint-Petersburg, the tall ship was greeted by the city authorities, representatives of marine transport companies, media, students and cadets of the University, relatives of young seafarers who undergo sailing practice onboard the famous ship.
The tall ship Mir was built in 1987. It is a sailing school for the cadets of Admiral Makarov State University of Maritime and Inland Shipping as well as other educational institutions of Russia and foreign countries.
Admiral Makarov State University of Maritime and Inland Shipping was set up through reorganization of two large industry-focused higher educational institutions - St.-Petersburg State University of Waterway Communications (SPSUWC) and Admiral Makarov State Maritime Academy (SMA) in the form of affiliation of the Academy to the University.
As of today, the University is a vertically integrated industry focused scientific and educational complex. Teaching of students and cadets is realized on technical, natural-scientific and humanitarian profiles directly or indirectly connected with globalized shipping industry, shipbuilding and transport logistics.
