Five-month cargo throughput at Latvia's Riga port rises 1.1% to 17.2 million tonnes

Cargo volume handled at the terminals of the Free Port of Riga, Latvia between January and May 2015 rose 1.1% on the same period of 2014 to 17,237,000 tonnes, the Port Authority told IAA PortNews.

In the reporting period dry bulk and liquid bulk segments showed slight gains: shipments of coal increased by 1.2% to 6,224,900 tonnes and of oil products - grew by 3% to 4,823,800 tonnes, while wood pellets volume fell by 4.8% to 226,700 tonnes, handling of scrap metal dropped by 26.8% to 293,900 tonnes. Ore shipments dropped by 36.7% to 104,700 tonnes.

Container throughput fell by 1.5% to 152,102 TEUs. Passenger traffic declined by 40.7% to 183,134 people, including cruise passengers - to 11,243 (- 13.5%).

Riga, Latvia based Free Port of Riga lies on both banks of the River Daugava (Western Dvina), The port encompasses 6.348 hectares, including 13,818-meter waterfront with berths max depths of 16 meters (ship draft - 12.2 m). Transit cargoes account for 80 percent of overall freight traffic moved to / from the CIS countries. In 2014, cargo throughput at the Port of Riga totaled 41,08 million tonnes.
