Delegates of European Maritime Day 2016 (EMD 2016) which has been opened today, May 18, in Turku (Finland), have discussed innovative environment and energy solutions in maritime business. IAA PortNews reporter says the opening session and key discussions were attended by Karmenu Vella, European Commissioner for Environment, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries; Kimmo Tiilikainen, Minister of Agriculture and the Environment, Finland; as well as Bernard Meyer, President, CESA (Community of European Shipyards' Association). Representatives of key players in the maritime business, Wärtsilä, Cargotec, Rolls-Royce, Fortum, Arctech Helsinki, have taken part in discussions and meetings.
The discussions were dedicated to closer cooperation within the European shipping community as well as cooperation with other market players, establishment of a unified EU flag for vessels. The challenges and cooperation in the Arctic were also in the spotlight at the conference.
European Maritime Day 2016 was organized by the European Commission: Directorate-General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, Finnish State, City of Turku.
