SCF says construction of tankers complying with Tier-III Standard will cost 16-22% more

Construction of Aframax tankers complying with the Tier-III Standard on Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) emissions from ships will cost 16% to 22% more as compared with construction of conventional tankers ($60 mln), IAA PortNews journalist cites Andrey Zhmurko, representative of the Engineering Center at SCF Group, as saying at the Conference on Baltic and North Sea NECA Roadmap.

According to him, the technologies available for reduction of NOx emissions to Tier-III level have not been sufficiently treated and have essential faults as shows the Company’s experience in their application. Introduction of those technologies will require either the state support of ship owners or the increase of charter rates.

According to the IMO MARPOL Convention Annex VI, 80-pct reduction of Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) emissions from ships is required from January 1, 2016 in NOx Emission Control Areas (NECAs). As of today, NECAs are located in the North America and United States Caribbean Sea. NECA status of the Baltic and the North Seas is under consideration.
