Newly built berth No 5a has been put into operation at seaport Olya in the Astrakhan Region, says press center of FSUE Rosmorport. Commissioning of the berth with the depth of 6.2 m and length of 170 m including a 25-metre wide wing was approved by Rosmorrechflot (Federal Marine and River Transport Agency) on August 2, 2016 (order No 30-RU30507311-НЖ-39/24-2016).
The berth was built by FSUE Rosmorport from October 2010 till June 2015 under the Federal Targeted Programme “Development of Russia’s Transport System in 2010-2015.
Berth No 5а with a design capacity of 490,000 t per year is intended for handling of Ro-Ro and general cargo vessels with length of up to 130 m, breadth of up to 16.22 and loaded draft of up to 5.1 m.
The construction was financed by the federal budget, construction costs totaled almost RUB 257.3 mln.
Berth No 5а will be leased out to the interested operators of sea terminals which will let increase the throughput of port Olya and improve the efficiency of Ro-Ro cargo transshipment.
Seaport Olya is located in the mouth of the Volga river. The port’s water area borders that of port Astrakhan. The port is open for round-the-year navigation with icebreaker assistance provided in winter period. Among the port’s key advantages are its geographical position on the crossroads of the international transport corridors "North-South", which connects Europe with Iran, Middle East and India, and "West-East", which opens the ways for Kazakhstan, China, Middle Asia and Europe. The port has a checkpoint on the State Border of Russia and the infrustructure for rendering a great variety of services for customs clearance of cargoes.
The port handles a wide range of export/import/transit cargoes: metal, equipment, sawn timber, construction materials, coal, coke, metal scrap, chemicals, fertilizers, grain, vegetable oil, etc.
