Forth Ports Limited, the UK’s 3rd largest Ports Group, announces the appointment of Alan McPherson as their new Chief Harbour Master for Scottish operations, the company said in its press release.
As Chief Harbour Master, Alan will be responsible for the busy waterways of the Forth and Tay which are manned by the navigation service 24/7. Alan will manage an operating area of 280 square miles of navigable waters, including two specialist marine terminals for oil and gas export and provides other marine services, such as towage and conservancy.
Alan, originally from Glasgow, is an experienced mariner and Harbour Master with over 17 years in the sector. Alan was previously with the Port of Tyne Authority where he held various roles in the 15 years with the company including Senior Pilot, Deputy Harbour Master and Harbour Master. He has also worked with the Port of Sunderland, Global Marine Drilling, Tidewater and Ben Line. Alan is also a Treasurer of the UK Harbour Masters Association.
Alan started on 7 October and is based in Grangemouth at the Forth and Tay Navigation Service.
Forth Ports Limited owns and operates eight commercial ports in the UK – Tilbury on the Thames, Dundee on the Firth of Tay and six on the Firth of Forth – Leith, Grangemouth, Rosyth, Methil, Burntisland and Kirkcaldy.
