HHLA has been awarded certification for its energy management, including its affiliated companies in all segments. External experts carried out the audits necessary for the certification on the Hamburg container terminals, on the rail subsidiaries Metrans Rail Deutschland and Polzug Polska, as well as on the fruit and refrigeration centre, to name but a few. All of these assessments turned out positive results. As a result, the ISO 50001 certification that has been held by the holding company and its subsidiary HPSG since 2015 was expanded.
Because the energy management system is now used so extensively, HHLA sustainability and energy management officer, Jan Hendrik Pietsch, sees the potential for further savings. “The energy management system has enabled us to identify a number of areas within the Group where energy is being consumed to varying extents. We are going to fully examine these areas to identify the possibilities for making meaningful energy savings. I am optimistic that this will pay off, both for HHLA and for the environment,” he says. The holding company has already proven that the energy management system works by reducing energy consumption in its offices in the first year by more than 11 percent over the previous year.
