FSUE Atomflot has commenced the utilization of nuclear-powered icebreakers, Rosatomflot says referring to the meeting of the Public Council on Safe Use of Atomic Energy held onboard the nuclear-powered icebreaker Lenin in the Murmansk Region.
Representatives of FSUE Atomflot, ship repair yard Nerpa, Northwest Center of Radioactive Waste Management Enterprise «RosRAO» have summarized the results of 2016.
Atomflot representative Oleg Halimullin said the first nuclear-powered icebreaker to undergo utilization is Sibir.
By November 13 the ship was towed to the anchorage of Nerpa shipyard. Reactor compartment equipment is to be taken out, packaged and transported by the end of November 2017. Thus, the Sibir will be prepared for scrapping.
The ship was initially planned to undergo complete scrapping but with the initiative of Atomflot the project was changed, hence the reduction of costs by almost 2.5 times with the time needed cut from 4 to 2 years.
Utilization of nuclear-powered icebreaker Arktika is to be performed in 2018-2019 under the Federal Targeted Programme “Nuclear and Radiation Safety Measures in 2016 - 2020 and till 2030”. The works will be performed according to the same procedure. The next nuclear-powered icebreaker to undergo utilization is the Rossiya. Besides, in 2016 it was decided to decommission the nuclear-power plant of the Sovetsky Soyuz icebreaker. The ship’s cold lay-up will begin in the middle of 2017.
Nerpa shipyard is currently busy with utilization of the Floating Maintenance Base “Lepse”.
