Port of New York and New Jersey container volumes up 5.5 percent to 527,974 TEUs in November 2016

Cargo volumes in November at the Port of New York and New Jersey set a new monthly record. The Port handled 302,688 containers (527,974 TEUs), a 5.5 percent increase over November 2015, which was the previous record November.

Historically, November cargo volumes average 256,600 containers. Import loads for November 2016 (156,003 containers) rose 8.9 percent compared to November 2015. Export loads for November 2016 (63,984 containers) fell 2.6 percent from November 2015, while export empties rose by 5.8 percent (81,223 containers).

Year-to-date volumes of 3,298,047 containers (5,723,821 TEUs) are behind 2015 by 2.3 percent.

Also in November, rail volumes (43,556 containers) rose 5.7 percent versus 2015, making it the best November on record for rail. Year-to-date volumes remain ahead of 2015 by 3.4 percent.

Auto volumes (37,997 containers) fell 14 percent compared to November 2015. For the year, autos are up 4.5 percent.
