Icebreaker Ilya Muromets of Project 21180 being built at Admiralteiskie Verfi shipyard in the framework of the State programme for naval construction is to be delivered to RF Navy in autumn 2017, says the Defence Ministry of Russia.
The outfitting works are underway in compliance with the schedule.
The ship is the first icebreaker to be built for RF Navy over a 45-year period. Upon completion of the mooring, sea and state trials the Ilya Muromets will join the Northern Fleet of RF Navy.
Ilya Muromets is the new single-deck versatile vessel intended for icebreakering support, for deployment of naval forces in ice conditions, independent escort of ship convoys, towing support in ice and open water. The vessel will be deployed for support of RF Navy’s Arctic forces.
The icebreaker Ilya Muromets of Project 21180 is a next generation vessel with new concepts of electric power and propulsion system. She is fitted with Azipod propulsion units housed in a submerged pod outside the ship hull and can rotate rotate 360 degrees about the vertical axis, thereby providing greater hydrodynamic and mechanical efficiency, enabling the ship to sail freely both forward, backward and sideways.
General characteristics: length overall - 85 m, breadth overall - 20 m, depth - 9.2 m, draft overall – 6.8 m, speed - 15 knots., icebreaking capability – 1.5 m, endurance (fuel / stores) – 30 to 60 days, displacement - 6,000 t, cruising range – up to 12,000 miles, crew - 35, capacity - 500 tonnes, cargo deck area - 380 sqm, cargo hold - 500 cbm, waste oil storage tank - 300 cbm.
The ship was laid down on April 23, 2015 and launched in June 2016. The outfitting is underway at the water area of Admiralteiskie Verfi.
