Expedition to the island of Matua (Kuril chain) has started from Vladivostok
The expedition to the island of Matua under leadership of the Pacific Fleet’s Deputy Commander Vice-Admiral Andrei Ryabukhin went to sea, says press center of RF Defence Ministry.
The PF’s detachment, composed of the major landing ship Admiral Nevelskoy, anchor handling tug supply vessel KIL-168 and salvage tug SB-522, with servicemen of the Pacific Fleet and representatives of the Russian Geographical Society aboard, left Vladivostok.
After arrival of ships to the island of Matua they will discharge equipment, property and expedition members to the shore.
Since 2016, the Russian Geographical Society, Russian Defence Ministry and Pacific Fleet have been carrying out a comprehensive work to study the historical, cultural and natural heritage of the island of Matua in the Kuril chain. This work includes laboratory studies of physicochemical and biological indicators, measurements of the external environment, radiation and chemical reconnaissance, research of fortifications and historical sites of the island. Divers carry out hydrographic exploration of the bays and gulfs of the island of Matua.
