Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding awarded a contract for supply of cranes for a new port in Thilawa, Yangon

Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. (MES) has been awarded a contract from Myanma Port Authority for supply of 8 container handling crane (2 x Ship To Shore:STS crane and 6 x Rubber Tired Gantry:RTG crane) for a new port in Thilawa, Yangon, the company said in its press release.

Myanmar on the way to progress with rapid economic growth has been experiencing huge increase of the cargo volume, which causes the capacity overflow of the existing ports in Yangon. This project is executed under ODA loan agreement between Myanmar and Japanese government signed in year 2013, for the development of the infrastructure in Thilawa area including construction of new port, aiming improvement of logistics infrastructure for the continuous and stable economic growth of Myanmar. For MES, this is the 1st crane supply project in Myanmar.

STS crane for this project will be equipped with “Soft Landing System”, which detects the distance between the spreader and containers by a sensor and reduces the lowering speed or stops lowering motion as the spreader approaches to a container. With thefunction, the impact on container/spreader at lowering operation will be less and reduce the damages to container/spreader. Also, it will assist operators when handling containers in hold which are difficult to see from the cabin. RTG crane will be lithium-ion hybrid type, which can achieve 50 to 60% fuel saving comparing to the conventional RTG and contribute to the reduction of port operation costs as well as CO2 emission.

In 1961 MES entered into a technical collaboration agreement with PACECO Inc., USA, the pioneer of container crane manufacturing business and in 1967 delivered the first container crane in Japan to Kobe. In 1988, MES acquired PACECO Inc. to enhance the container crane manufacturing business, and to-date have delivered more than 350 units of STS and 1200 units of RTG all over the world, mainly to South East Asia. I addition to the supply of hardware, MES have more than 150 delivery reference of terminal management software, and also been enhancing after-sales support business of its products.
