25 June is observed worldwide as the Day of the Seafarer, with this year’s theme “seafarers matter”. The purpose of the day is to recognise the contribution of the 1.5 million seafarers for their role in international seaborne trade, the world economy and society as a whole.
According to the IMO, ships transport almost 90 per cent of the world's goods. Seafarers are not only responsible for the operation of the vessels but also responsible for the safe and smooth delivery of the cargo.
