Technical readiness of diesel-electric icebreaker Viktor Chernomyrdin is 55%

Technical readiness of 25-MW diesel-electric icebreaker Viktor Chernomyrdin is 55%, IAA PortNews correspondent cites Aleksei Petrov, head of Investment Management Department at Rosmorrechflot (Federal Marine and River Transport Agency), as saying at the Rosmorrechflot’s Board and the Public Council.

According to him, the delivery is expected in September 2018.

The icebreaker of project 22600 is a powerful diesel-electric icebreaker (25 MW) with a wide range of functional capabilities. It is being built under the programme on renovation of the national icebreaking fleet. The icebreaker named Victor Chernomyrdin was laid down in Saint-Petersburg and launched on 30 December 2016. The icebreaker is to be put into operation in 2018. Icebreaker’s key characteristics: displacement – 22,258 t, LOA – 142.4 m, BOA - 29 m, draught – 8.5 m to 9.5 m, power - 25 MW, speed – about 17 knots, endurance - 60 days, icebreaking capability - 2 m, crew - 38. The icebreaker’s unique propulsion system consists of two Azipod units (7.5 MW each) and one centerline propeller shaft coupled to a fixed pitch propeller (10 MW). The electrical propulsion system - where the electric motor with propeller is mounted inside a streamlined pod capable of 360 degree movement beneath the ship - can drive and steer the ship at the same time.
